Ever since it was founded by Hamilcar Barca in the third century before Christ, Barcelona has been an important city – not only in Spain, but in the whole world. Privileged to be located in the northeastern part of the coast of the Iberian peninsula and facing the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona has become a major economic and entertainment center. Barcelona is also a very popular tourist destination, with beautiful sandy beaches and an outstanding night life. It is the second largest city in Spain, and the capital of Catalonia. Two languages are spoken in Barcelona — Catalan, which is the dominant language, and Spanish.

Aside from being a metropolis, Barcelona is famous for its history, culture and architecture. Its cultural roots go back around two thousand years. Barcelona is filled with numerous museums, with the City History Musem being the most famous one. Architecture in Barcelona is simply mesmerizing – many buildings date from the medieval period, and some are even older. The type of architecture present in Barcelona is labelled as Art Nouveau – filled with masterpieces from Antoni Gaudi, the most famous architect in Barcelona, who has a recognizable style. His most famous building is probably the Sagrada Familia church, which isn’t finished yet. Barcelona has a solid education system, with University of Barcelona being the most prominent institution in this field. There are various public and private schools throughout the whole city, which are attented by both domestic and immigrant population.

The most popular product of Barcelona is definitely their football club, FC Barcelona. FC Barcelona, or simply Barca, was founded in 1899 by Joan Gamper. It is the second most successful club in Spain so far, having won 19 La Liga titles, 25 Spanish Cups and 3 Champions League trophies. That makes them one of the most successful clubs in Europe. In the last 20 years, FC Barcelona has been nurturing a specific type of football called total football, which was developed by Rinus Michels, a Dutch coach. This type of football play is very pleasing for the eye, with attacking being more important than defending. Therefore, Barcelona has gained many fans and today represents one of the most popular and famous clubs, with probably most fans in the world. It is often labelled as the team who plays the most attractive football in the world. Their most famous player today is Lionel Messi, an Argentinian wizard who, after spending 4 years in the youth and B teams of Barca, entered the first team in 2004. Ever since, he kept on impressing every time he touched the ball. He was one of the most important players in the season 2008/09, when FC Barcelona won the treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League), a historical achievement. The club’s base in the biggest stadium in Europe, Camp Nou. The fans of Barca are called “cules”, who proudly follow the club’s motto – „mes que un club“, which means „more than a club“. The biggest derby in the world is called “el classico” and it is played between two huge rivals — Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In conclusion, it is easy to say that Barcelona is one of those cities that have it all. Its development hasn’t stopped, of course — with time, it is going to get even better, in every aspect possible.
