Why is biology important
Biology is a branch of natural science and is indispensable to our daily lives. As a study of life and living organisms, it seeks to establish the relationship and interactivity between two major aspects of life — plants and animals. Here are some of the areas which testify the importance of biology in our daily life:
1. Cell theory: We realize the importance of the cell as the basic unit of life. We understand how there exists growth and development in a living organism through cell division. Through cell theory, we familiarize ourselves with metabolism, the energy flow process that occur in cells and the genetic information DNA, which is transmitted from one cell to the other, during cell division.
2. Evolution: Life changes and moves ahead through the process of evolution, one of the most popular lessons that are taught in biology. We learn that all forms of life having a common origin, an ancestral gene pool. This particular common ancestor of all living organisms is believed to be in existence about 3. 5 billion years ago.
3. Genetics: Biology makes familiarizes us with genetics and DNA study. Genes are hereditary units that correspond to the region of DNA that affects the form or function of a living organism in particular ways. From the small unit of life, single-celled bacteria to the human beings, all of them share a common machine that translates DNA into a protein form. This also comes under the purview of molecular biology.
4. Homeostasis: We understand how a living organism regulates its internal system to suit or balance with the external environment. The organ or organ system either reduces or increases its activity to match with the condition that makes the body function effectively. For instance, we sweat more in humid weather. Sweating is one of the homeostatic functionalities to regulate your body temperature to normal in case of hot weather.
5. Energy: Biology teaches us how life prospers and develops through sustained input of energy. We study how our body undergoes a series of chemical reactions to extract energy from food and transform them to build new cells.
6. Ecology: Though ecology, one of the important branches of biology, we learn the independence and interactions of a living organism with its environment.
7. Botany: Botany, one of the most important aspects of Biology is a study of plant life and its interaction with the environment.
8. Zoology: The study of animals, their classification, physiology, development and animal behavior are some of the aspects discussed in this comprehensive field of biology.
9. Understanding anatomy: The study of form and functions of organs and organ systems in human beings are studied extensively in this branch of biology.
10. Biomedical research: This helps us to understand the study of human body with special relevance to prevention and treatment of disease.
