Why is wheat germ healthy

Cereals have always been an important part of our diet, even from thousands of years ago. Because of this, traders and farmers developed a method which would allow them to store wheat flour for longer periods of time. This process completely removed the germ and the bran from the flour, which meant the actual flour would be preserved for longer periods of time. However, by eliminating these parts of the wheat plant, vitamin E, proteins, and linoleic acids are also removed. This method of storage is still being used today, which is why you’ll find wheat germ and wheat bran as separate products on the market in many supermarkets and health food stores.

It has been known for a long time that wheat germ is the best source of vitamin E available among any of the foods we eat. Coupled with the fact that the American Journal of Epidemiology published a journal in 1988 stating that regular vitamin E can help protect against cancer, it’s easy to see why wheat germ should be added to the healthy diet. Not only can wheat germ help protect you against cancer, it is also known to be a good protector of metabolism on the cellular level, which means tissues last long longer and age slower.
There have been several other claims concerning the health benefits of wheat germ, and scientists who have studied the product have found that most of them are in fact, true. It’s a known fact among the scientific community that any deficiency of vitamin E in a woman can cause irregular periods, and can increase the risk of miscarriage. This is why so many pregnant women are encouraged to add wheat germ to their diet while they are pregnant. In men, a deficiency in vitamin E is directly related to slower sperm function.

In addition to providing our bodies with much needed vitamin E, there are many other health benefits of wheat germ, too. These include the protection of cell membranes from oxidation and free radicals, and completely blocking the process nitrites found in preserved foods use to form tumors. Because wheat germ is a product which is derived from wheat flour and is removed in the flour making process, there are several ways you can incorporate it into your diet. The most common way many people get it into their diet is by buying wheat germ flakes. Just a few sprinkles over cereal yogurt, and you’ll have your recommended daily value of wheat germ. If you’d rather not use flakes, there are also wheat germ oils and capsules which can make ingesting wheat germ easier.

As with everything, too much of something can be a bad thing, so be sure and read the recommended dosage before you begin a wheat germ regimen. Vitamin E can be considered toxic if more than the recommended dose is taken, as it can oxidize with the copper in your blood and could present potentially serious health problems.
